Motor Boat Exemption Permit
All of our guests qualify for a motor exempt permit for use on Saganaga Lake for the duration of their stay. This exemption is Grandfathered into our property and available exclusively to our lodging guests. With it, You do not need to get a Motor Boat Permit normally required to operate a motor in the lake. Motorboat Permits are in high demand and are usually sold out well in advance. If you stay with us, you don't need to worry about reserving a permit way in advance or leaving it up to chance to snag a last-minute cancellation. We give you a stress-free guarantee you'll be able to legally operate your motorboat for your planned activities out on the lake - Even on short notice or busiest times!
Note that Motorboats on Saganaga Lake are limited to a Maximum of 25 horsepower.
Required Info
If you're interested in bringing your Motorboat to use on the lake, the following information is required :
- Group leader name, address, and phone number
- Number of boats (max 4 per permit)
- Number and names of anyone potential going in the boat (maximum of 9 total)
- They will ask for a four digit code which is sent in the welcome email the morning of your arrival. If you need to have it issued by email, Please call us to receive the four digit pin.
How to pick up the Exempt Permit
The exempt permit is to be picked up in person at the Grand Marais Ranger Station

Mon-Fri 800am - 430 pm
If you are traveling outside of their business hours you can call ahead and have them issue it by email

The Permit Process
Day-Use and Overnight Motor Permits require reservations between May 1 and September 30, and have a limited number of permits available. They are released on a first-come, first-served basis on the last Wednesday of January each year. They go fast and once they're gone, It's difficult to get one. If there is a last minute cancellation, they go back up for general sale, and you can sometimes get walk-up permits the day before, but these are both left to chance. If you want want a to use a Motorboat, You'll either need to be lucky, Reserve a permit before they're sold out (way in advance), or Canoe without using a motor.
